Brutalist architecture inspired the brief for the minimalist construction of a bachelor’s pad in the mountains behind Byron Bay. Two repurposed shipping containers form a twelve metre spine which house the building's utilitarian spaces: the galley kitchen, laundry and ensuite bathroom. Two adjacent black cubes constructed from steel and other raw structural elements serve as living and sleeping pods with break out areas that brings the outdoor landscape into the living spaces. The harsh exterior is in sharp contrast to the inhabitant's distinguished love of a maximalist decorative interior, full of textural finishes, handmade imperfections and an ever expanding art collection.
